Why your HEIC photos won't open
iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. It's a great format for storage, but plenty of software still refuses it - older Windows machines, many upload forms, design tools, and most things built before 2018. PNG opens everywhere, full stop.

Common questions
- Does converting lose quality?
- No - PNG is lossless, so the output is a pixel-perfect copy of the decoded photo. The trade-off is size: PNGs are much larger files than HEICs. If you want small files that still open everywhere, pick JPG or WebP in the toolbar instead - same one-step conversion.
- Does it work on Windows?
- Yes - it runs in your browser, so Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android all work. No app to install, no HEIF codec pack needed.
- Where do my photos go?
- They're processed in memory and never stored - nothing is kept after your converted file comes back.
- Can I convert HEIC to JPG instead?
- Yes - select JPG in the format bar before (or after) dropping your photos. JPG files are far smaller than PNG and are the better pick for sharing or uploading. You can even set a target file size and Squish will hit it automatically.
